Warm tribute to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, a legend in his own lifetime leaves behind an ocean of scintillating and heart-tugging epics of Hindustani Classical Music that will last for innumerable lifetimes to come. A warm-hearted tribute
…….
Like God, he hardly ever said anything to strangers. He simply rendered in bounty, the seemingly perennial stream of soulful ragas to whoever sat to listen in front of him or to whoever put on the audio gadgets at their homes and cars to hear his mesmerizing voice. And there were millions and millions of them crossing boundaries of caste, creed, religion and countries, asking for more. This insatiable hunger to hear him endlessly was created by the Creator himself – the immortal maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. He could innovate one raga to give it a 1,000 expressions and stun the audience with this magical ability never ever heard before and perhaps never again.

Pandit Bhimsen Joshi who passed away on January 24 due to old age related illness was a personification of dedication to Hindustani Classical Music, to the extent that he was dissolved in its vast body and soul and was unmindful of his own existence. While he was and will continue to be the stalwart guru to generations and generations of singers, he himself was the ardent disciple of Sawai Gandharva (who taught him Classical music of the Kirana Gharana) till the very end. While he stormed into limelight when he performed on public stage in Pune to celebrate his guru’s 60th birthday, the annual Sawai Gandharva Festival which he hosted since 1953 was the ultimate and the most prestigious platform for budding classical singers and dancers as well as for the veterans.

While to him goes the credit of the magnanimous contribution of bringing classical music closest to the common man through the Sawai Gandharva festival, he is also instrumental in bringing humility to live performances. The Sawai Gandharva Festival is a classical example wherein an artist, no matter of what stature, sits around like you and me and takes stage with a bowed head, as if in obeisance to the great tradition of Classical Music. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi himself, particularly in the last years of his life when he was unable to perform would sit on a plastic chair carelessly kept on the side. One would understand his presence because you would see a fleet of maestros and admirers going towards him to touch his feet.

For a journalist, it was extremely difficult to interview Pandit Bhimsen Joshi unless he was aware that the journalist was proficient in the knowledge of Classical Music. Otherwise, his answers used to be in mono syllables and you would have to find answers from those who were close to him. His greatness was such that any adornment with the Padma awards (he was the recipient of all three of them) or even the Bharat Ratna seemed like a drop in the ocean of the glorious music that he rendered. It’s like – what can you give God? Flowers? Leaves? Gold? Anything seems too inconsequential for an existence that was larger-than-life.

From being a radio artist to the most sought after stage artist, he rode on an incessant wave of success and admiration till the very end. For six decades of his career he was almost constantly traveling all over the country and the world. Earlier, he would drive around the country in his car – he had a Mercedes – but with increasing invitations, he had no choice but to fly and was sometimes called the Flying Guruji. His acumen in driving and knowing the mechanics of the car that he drove astounded his near and dear friends. Once noted compere Sudhir Gadgli sat in the front seat while Panditji was driving to Nashik. Known for high speed driving, his car almost collided with an oncoming truck. Panditji swerved the car and was saved by a whisker. Naturally Gadgil gasped as a sigh of relief. Panditji said to him, “don’t worry, dhotrala lagel pun mandila lagnar nahi (meaning, it will touch the dhoti but not the skin of my thigh). He wanted to express his perfection in car driving.

Besides his Classical Music that was par excellence, his rich repertoire of abhangs (Marathi devotional songs) captured the heart of entire Maharashtra. He can be given the credit of familiarising abhangs to all and sundry. `Indrayani kathi’ and `Tujhe Mahera Pandhari’ are a couple of evergreen numbers. For those who do not have a yearning for classical music, he hit national headlines and won millions of more admirers with national song of unity – `Mile Sur mera tumhara, toh sur bane hamara…’

It’s almost as if Pune has lost the most precious jewel from its treasure chest. Though of course, some are born, never to die. Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is one of those rare ones. We salute him.

Pune gave a fond and tearful farewell to Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. Hundreds thronged to his house in Navi Peth where is body was kept. Intelligent Pune spoke to some noted Puneites who were close to Panditji and narrated a few incidents which reflects the greatness of Panditji.

Lauryn, Girl you better watch out…

She is at it again. I don’t know if this is a PR stunt or just the worst form of CP time ever. Lauryn Hill shows up over 3 hours late, to another concert. This time the fans left.

The Atlanta fans didn’t just walk silently out of the concert, they stomped and stormed out in packs. They were infuriated and I think this may be the norm for Ms. Hill latest string of events. The show was scheduled to start at 9 pm. But L-Boogie, the former Fugee La-er, hit the stage well after midnight.

I hear the fans were so confused of why Hill told her band to speed up the music on some of her classic hits. I know some former band members and singers of hers, and I hear the songs go beyond recognition when she tries to sing them at speeds unknown to man. LOL

I know this industry will drain you, it will also make you work hard even when you want to just chill. My business, not personal question I would love to ask L, is why? Like, you have the world wanting your heart and the passion you gave us on the Mis-education. So was you really trying to tell us something then, that we are afraid to see now. That you really have lost your heart for the music? If so, I know some very hungry and aspiring singers who would love to take your once untouchable place. In my MOpinion.

So I ask, is Lauryn finito? Or she just playing with the people’s emotions?

Nicole Murphy gets engaged…Guess who proposed

Well, guess she can put a hold on the messy and concentrate on picking out her off white. I don’t think she will still be dealing with the shadow of regret for splurging all of her divorce money for long. Seems that Nicole former Mrs. Murphy, finna get her last name changed again. Guess who’s putting a ring on it? Michael Strahan her longtime football player boyfriend has proposed. I reckon he isn’t trippin’ off how she BMF. She allegedly drained her $15 million dollar settlement from Eddie, and had IRS woes out the hooty to deal with as well. Life goes on. Don’t it.

An official “4ever” date hasn’t been set yet. But I hear the left 4th finger ring is gorge. I ain’t mad heyyyyy.

I just hope they have a business plan. I hear they both don’t live by the budget, which is a uber no-no in this economy.

Marques Houston’s Big win in court

I wake up to some of the strangest things at times. It can be my son tapping me “Mommy get up, I want breftist” (translation: breakfast for a 1-year-old). Or my daughters saying “Mommy so are we famous like you”. Or, an anonymous email with the official documents from a Van Nuys California court in reference to Marques Houston granted a restraining order. This is very messy.

Ever since the accusations of child molestation by a former manager, to claims of who was allegedly on the DL in the industry to Twitter rants and public apologies Raz B has met his match. Though they were once close friends, now Raz isn’t allowed at least 100 feet around Marques Houstons’ perimeter. It doesn’t stop there. I’ve broken the first page up for viewing clarity, the other 3 pages I didn’t feel compelled to post, Damario “Raz B” Thornton, is not allowed to talk about, tweet, text, or mention Marques Houston nor his girlfriends’ name, for at least the next two years.

Although this seems like a victory, it’s just a milestone on the dozens of other claims Raz B is making toward other ex-B2K members and Chris Stokes. We shall see how this all pans out.

For now, as per the judge, I would like to see that Raz seeks medical attention in reference to his mental incompetence. This is beginning to look very sad and desperate. In my MOpinon.

The Game will be out of $50,000…Why?

Well, looks like Rapper/Father The Game’s pocket will be thousands thinner.

He was ordered to pay his cousin $50 grand for damages resulting from an assault that occurred during his sister’s funeral in 2008.

Jayceon Taylor (aka The Game), allegedly disagreed with his share of the costs for his sister Shannon Johnson funeral, a verbal lashing ensued between he and his cousin Robert ‘Kirky’ Kirkwood and others that turned into an all out brawl at the fune home. Messy. The aftermath of it all, left The Game arrested and charged with assault and battery.

In court docs, Kirky claims he suffered “severe and permanent injuries”. Ummmm Hmmmm.

The shade is, it probably cost more to pay his cousin than his share of the fune. I hope he learned from this, in my MOpinion.

SAY IT AIN’T SO! Is Lil Wayne a racist?

Well, I’m not sure if you heard the many rumors surrounding the controversial words spewed from Lil’ Wayne’s mouth. Well word is, some anonymous females were chillin’ in the hotel with he and his YM/CM crew. Allegedly a piece of his lyrics may become the beginning of his demise. So some of the lyrics snatched from Wayne’s “Right Above It” go ” “Beautiful Black Woman I bet that b*tch look better red.” I personally didn’t take any offense to it, considering Wayne has allegiance with the Blood gang, whose colors are RED. But of course since the recent twist of events following his prison release, he has been in a whirlwind of media scrutiny.

The victim alleges that Wayne made a comment about their complexion. When one of the woman reminded Wayne that his daughter is dark-skinned, his alleged reply was, ““my daughter is a dark skin millionaire that’s the difference between her and u”. WOW.

So here is the question I want to ask, has he lost the respect of the black female and some male in our community as a whole? Or has he just been misquoted in a sensitive world that would love to use color as an issue and it’s not that serious. I personally don’t care what a lot of these celebs say, there are certain things that should not even be discussed. I learned that in media coaching 10 years ago. DUHHH! Me being a mom I feel compelled to say to all who have a skin color issue against any color women, pleas keep your misogynistic, racist thoughts to yourself and ask God to deal with that mess in ya heart. In my MOpinion.

Katy Perry morning face vs. makeup face

Which Katy Perry would you rather see? Yep, Katy Perry looks more like Katy Scary without all the glitz and glam. Not that she is a wretched site, cuz she is a cute gal. But as you can see, when makeup is applied she is less hard on our eyes. No shade, I’m just saying. Go KP, tell your hubby to stop catching you slippin’ the putting it on Twitter! You know the world isn’t supposed to know that you’re happy and human. Lol
